L. would appreciate that the last two days' narrative can be summed up by its food:
Sunday: a late breakfast of bagels and fruit salad at the home of friends who live along the Delaware, followed by a walk along the towpath from their home into Frenchtown, about a mile north. We pulled any tired children along in a red wagon, and brought plastic bags to pick up trash in honor of Earth Day.
Dinner: Farewell to Frenchtown, and a drive 45 minutes south to The College of New Jersey, which Rich's sister attends. A walk to a campus lake, etc., then a hunt in Trenton's old Italian Chambersburg section for DeLorenzo's Tomato Pies, which is commonly rated as a top pizza (er, tomato pie) by fans of the slice. DeLorenzo's is so no-frills that, with no bathroom and a wait, it is hardly kid-friendly (oh, that story later), but we had followed the recommendation of an old friend and our DeLorenzo's gift certificates had been sitting in my wallet going on three years. But the pizza? Wonderful.
Today, recovery from yesterday's ambitious schedule: the library in the afternoon, and ice cream at Montclair's Applegate Farms with our neighbor, a freelance writer and teacher who appreciates our children, luckily. We, meanwhile, are grateful that someone without children of her own doesn't mind the occasional baby-fuss. Our ice cream flavors of choice? Variations on the theme of chocolate, which is the symphony I would write, if I could.
