Home Skool

Does anyone else out there have a recurring home schooling fantasy? I do. I imagine the Bean, Lena and I all reading the great classics, until Lena decides to go out for a walk to take photographs, kind of like a 14 year-old homeschooled teenager did once when I was visiting his mother at their Jersey City home. She was one of the founding members of a still-active CSA and seemed to be truly living her values.

Another homeschooling family we met in Maine boasted a pair of seven year-old twins with the most incredible decorum and curiosity of any child I'd ever met, let alone seven year-olds. After our visit, they sent us a handmade thank you picture. On it they drew Ella in the overalls she wore that day, throwing down finger puppets at the family's flock of chickens when, out of sheer excitement and surprise, she didn't know what else to do.

Doubts, of course: my patience levels and desire to have my own work-space and work-time. And organization: that for us has been a long, slow arc.

Maybe we can start a rotating homeschooling "collective." Kind of like a potluck, but with kids...
