The Food Police

The Bean is sitting at the dining room table singing songs about food, specifically the foods that make you "big and strong." That is my chosen momism for "eat your goshdarned vegetables before I...". It's the Gentle Discipline version.

Meanwhile, her affordable, public school-embedded preschool, which started this month, seems to be undercutting our mission. There were gummies of some variety the first week--a stand-in, I told myself, before the parents' checks cleared. Today, I understand, there was "Halloween jello." Don't they know the rumor is these food dyes make kids crazy? Will my kid be an outcast with her Ak-Mak crackers and dried figs? Or is this what the suburbs do? Could I soon be sending along the latest cheesy poofs and squeezeable sugary yogurt extravaganzas?
