Blueberry season around here is like the sudden onset of a smoking habit. Between breakfast and snacks, a pint is easily gone in a day, and unless we have bought multiple pints, we are furtively back in the store (god willing) to address tomorrow's cravings.
Meanwhile, Lena was introduced to raspberries this week at my parents' home. It didn't take long before she pointed "Ugh! Ugh!" at any red berry that my father had missed popping off the vine and directing to her mouth. And THAT season really isn't yet in full swing, so we were really negotiating their ripeness, anyhow. The Bean, at 18 months, was picking in a field of (easily) a hundred raspberry bushes at my grandfather's farm, and as you can imagine, it was straight from the beloved Robert McCloskey book: scarcely a Ka-Plink! Ka-Plank! Ka-Plunk! in that bucket.
Now, we are gearing up for an organic U-Pick-It date next week. I have been waiting for this ALL YEAR. This is going to be balls-to-the-wall, babies on their own, buckets at the ready. I just wonder if any will actually make it into the freezer this year...
