The Book That Made You a Sane Parent/ Parent-to-Be?

My friend Liz--who I saw as part of our annual four-woman Douglass College camping reunion (an event which always makes me infinitely saner)--is expecting to expect. As she handles life changes thoughtfully and soberly, she was asking if I had any books to recommend. I sent her these titles, but was wondering if friends have any other suggestions to add. Suggestions are not required to have a colon in their title...

The Mother Trip: Hip Mama's Guide to Staying Sane in the Chaos of Motherhood by Ariel Gore
The Fruits of Labour: Creativity, Self-Expression and Motherhood, edited by Penny Sumner
Misconceptions: Truth, Lies and the Unexpected on the Journey to Motherhood by Naomi Wolf
The Big Rumpus by Ayun Halliday

Ooh, yes - good choices, though I haven't read The Fruits of Labor... will need to check it out. My favorites on that list are The Mother Trip and Misconceptions. Two other books that helped me realize there is more than one way to be a mom are Flux (Peggy Orenstein) and Atlas of the Human Heart (Ariel Gore). Good luck, Liz!

That's the first time I've seen my name in print for a while!

Thanks for great suggestions - I will check them out soon. And no, I'm not pregnant yet!
